This handsome Greek stamp portrays a Gaida of the Macedonian variety, one of several bagpipes found in Greece. As with Irish/English/Scottish pipes there's a potential political charge on this - I've received one irate email from a Greek gentleman who took offense because the example of a similar bagpipe on this website, located here, is called Macedonian rather than Greek. In his view Macedonia is part of Greece and the pipe should therefore be called Greek, not Macedonian, etc. However, when we speak of the origins of this or that bagpipe we are referring to the cultural setting, not national boundaries; furthermore, we believe that everyone would be much better off if they paid more attention to musicians and less to politicians. |
