This handsome stamp is interesting from several perspectives. It depicts a detail from a huge circular panorama by then-East German artist Werner Tubke. Our main interest of course is the piper, a weird creature both skeletal and voluptuous (from what can be seen on the stamp). ![]() detail from stamp However, it is striking that the theme of this section of the vast painting is the Battle of Frankenhausen in 1525, in which peasants fought against the ruling princes. The peasants lost. Was this stamp intended as a warning to the "peasants" of modern East Germany that the "princes" would crush any rebellion? If so, it failed - the year this stamp was issued, 1989, was the year the Berlin Wall came down. |
